Dir. Wes Anderson. 2001, 110 mins. 35mm. With Gene Hackman, Anjelica Huston, Ben Stiller, Gwyneth Paltrow, Luke Wilson, Owen Wilson, Bill Murray. Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson earned an Oscar nomination for writing this brilliantly self-contained comedy-drama about three gifted siblings and their relationship with their absent, selfish father, Royal Tenenbaum (a marvelous Hackman in his greatest late-career role) shot on location in a New York City that feels at once real and imagined, in Anderson’s brilliantly idiosyncratic style. Though Anderson had established his vivid look and particular brand of beautiful melancholy with Bottle Rocket and Rushmore, it was The Royal Tenenbaums that firmly set his cinematic world view in stone, every shot and off-kilter comic touch and unexpected music cue to be forever imitated.
Tickets: $15 / $11 senior and students / $9 youth (ages 3–17) / free for MoMI members at the Senior/Student level and above. Order tickets. Please pick up tickets at the Museum’s admissions desk upon arrival. All seating is general admission. Review safety protocols before your visit.
