No Budget Story

Saturday, Oct 14, 2023 at 1:00 pm

Location: Redstone Theater

Followed by discussion with Renos Haralambidis moderated by film historian Andrew Horton

Dir. Renos Haralambidis. 1997. 87 mins. DCP. In Greek with English subtitles. With Renos Haralambidis, Yannis Bostantzoglou, Dimitra Papadima, Giorgos Voultzatis, Vana Pefani. Eirinaios, a wannabe film director, has four unsold movie scripts in hand. Approaching 30, he faces eviction for not paying the rent. He meets a soft-hearted maker of porn flicks and, to make ends meet, they decide to shoot a love story. While waiting to go into production, Eirinaios shoots a no-budget TV commercial, washes windows, and falls in love. Haralambidis’s debut film, winner of the prestigious FIPRESCI prize at the Istanbul Film Festival, is a refreshing look at Athenian culture at the end of the century that combines everything from subway scenes to traditional Greek songs to playful winks to Robert De Niro in Taxi Driver.
