Dir. Gina Prince-Bythewood. 2000, 120 mins. DCP. With Sanaa Lathan, Omar Epps, Dennis Haysbert, Alfre Woodard. The debut feature from writer-director Prince-Bythewood (The Woman King, Beyond the Lights) has ascended to modern classic status thanks to its rare ability to beguile as both a romance and sports movie, and thanks to the fiery chemistry between two dynamic young stars on the rise. Monica (Lathan) and Quincy (Epps) are two childhood friends who both aspire to be professional basketball players. Quincy, whose father, Zeke (Dennis Haysbert), plays for the Los Angeles Clippers, is a natural talent and a born leader. Monica is ferociously competitive but sometimes becomes overly emotional on the court. Over the years, the two begin to fall for each other, but their separate paths to basketball stardom threaten to pull them apart. Winner of the 2001 Independent Spirit Award for Best Screenplay.
