Home for the Holidays

Saturday, Nov 19 at 1:00 p.m.

Friday, Nov 25 at 3:00 p.m.

Dir. Jodie Foster. 1995, 103 mins. 35mm. With Holly Hunter, Robert Downey Jr., Anne Bancroft, Charles Durning, Dylan McDermott, Geraldine Chaplin, Cynthia Stevenson, Steve Guttenberg, Claire Danes. Foster brings her genuinely eccentric directorial eye to this rollicking, yet immensely moving comic drama that stands as one of the most perceptive of all American films about the sometimes unbearable dynamics of family. Claudia (a captivating Hunter) has just been fired from her art museum job in Chicago when she must make the journey home to suburban Baltimore for Thanksgiving, where she must contend with aging parents (a sublime Bancroft and Durning); a hyperactive, secretive brother (Downey Jr., in full mania mode); and a conservative, bigoted sister (Stevenson) who can barely hide her resentment for her siblings. Touching upon emotional truths without succumbing to gooey sentiment, Home for the Holidays is the rare seasonal perennial that asks hard questions about the tenuous connections so many of us feel to our biological families.

This film is rated PG-13, recommended for ages 13 and up.
