Dir. Mamoru Oshii. 1995, 84 mins. DCP. Japanese with English subtitles. With Atsuko Tanaka, Iemasa Kayumi, Akio Ôtsuka. Writer-director Oshii’s legendary anime adaptation of Masamune Shirow’s popular cyberpunk manga is set in 2029 Hong Kong, where an information network powers society, connecting cybernetic bodies (shells) and souls (ghosts). A major influence on the Wachowskis’ Matrix trilogy, the film follows agent Major Kusanagi in a search for “The Puppet Master,” a computer-generated virus able to hack into minds. Oshii’s masterful hand-drawn cel animation combines with computer-generated graphics to create a visionary spectacle that has retained its philosophical and moral depth over the decades.
