Dir. Joel Coen. 1996, 98 mins. 4K DCP. With Frances McDormand, William H. Macy, Steve Buscemi, Peter Stormare, Harve Presnell. This dark comedy about a botched kidnapping in rural Minnesota that turns into a triple homicide is the quintessential Joel and Ethan Coen movie, with its audacious blend of Midwestern understatement and violent mayhem. McDormand deservedly won a Best Actress Oscar for her hilarious, deeply felt work as the sly, unflappable police chief Marge Gunderson, who grows suspicious that a squirrelly car salesman (a brilliant Macy) might be the key to unlocking a local homicide.
Note: the 4/20 presentation is a reprise of the 4/14 screening with the film’s composer Carter Burwell in person. Burwell will not be appearing at the 4/20 screening.
