Dir. Joel Coen. 1996, 98 mins. 4K DCP. With Frances McDormand, William H. Macy, Steve Buscemi, Peter Stormare, Harve Presnell. Best known for scoring all the Coen brothers’ movies (a collaboration now in its fifth decade) and five films for Todd Haynes, the brilliant composer Carter Burwell moves between independent and Hollywood films, always bringing intelligence, restraint, and inventiveness to his varied projects. While much movie music is heavy-handed, Burwell’s can be spare and idiosyncratic, always adding layers of meaning and emotion. A dark comedy about a botched kidnapping in rural Minnesota that turns into a triple homicide, Fargo is the quintessential Joel and Ethan Coen movie, with its audacious blend of Midwestern understatement and violent mayhem perfectly captured by Burwell’s lean but unforgettable score. Burwell will discuss his work with the Coens and his career in a post-film conversation moderated by series curator David Schwartz.
