Summer Media Camp!

July 8–August 16, 2024

Registration open.

This summer, Museum of the Moving Image will hold its popular media day camp onsite starting July 8. Onsite camp sessions run Monday through Friday, 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. Children ages 9–14 can participate. Camps vary week to week and can be taken independently or in any combination. All levels of experience are welcome. Your child will receive an abundance of personalized attention in a safe environment: the average child-to-teacher ratio is 7:1. Parents should know that face masks are recommended but not required. Please review our safety guidelines.

Summer Media Camp is the perfect way for your children to explore something new, express their creativity, and experiment with digital technology. Working under the guidance of specially trained artists and educators, your child will collaborate with other children to create original movies, animated films, video games, and even enter the metaverse! Works made in the camp will then be featured in a special showcase at the Museum for family and friends. All levels of experience are welcome. Each child will leave camp with the confidence and knowledge that they created something awesome!

A diptych of images: on the left, two children with long hair hold an orange puppet in front of a green screen in a film studio; they are also on a monitor in front of them, with the silhouette of a child with short hair standing with his back to the camera in the foreground; an older person, perhaps a teacher, stands to the right; on the right side image, a young boy with short hair stands behind a video camera and looks through the viewfinder

Next Generation Animators

July 8–12

Discover how you can use stop-motion animation to make everyday objects come to life on screen. Working with computers, tablets, cameras, and crafts, children will work in small production teams to develop, direct, and film their own original animated movies.

Digital Game Designers

July 15–19

Campers will immerse themselves in digital game design and explore what makes their favorite video games fun. They’ll remix classic video games by creating new levels, rules, and characters, while getting exclusive access to the Museum’s collection of video games during days when the galleries are closed to the public.

Virtual Reality Adventures

July 22–26 (for ages 11-14 only)

Come create immersive new worlds using the latest moving image technologies. Campers will learn to use virtual reality and augmented reality tools, innovate using the power of performing arts, and craft their own unique extended reality experiences. No previous VR experience is needed.

Future Filmmakers

July 29–August 2

Learn how to make your own short film while exploring the Museum’s online collection in a week packed with hands-on video-making experiences. Kids will collaborate in small production teams to create an original silent film that they will write, direct, produce, and star in.

Claymation Creators

August 5–9

Aspiring animators will explore the delightful process of Claymation (clay animation) as they learn the techniques necessary to make their own films. Campers will design and create their own sets, props, and characters to animate their own original Claymation film.

Puppet TV

August 12–16

Led by our Puppeteer in Residence, who has been featured on popular television shows, campers will design their own character, experimenting with a variety of styles and materials, which they then use to produce an original sketch. Drawing inspiration from the Museum’s Jim Henson Exhibition, they’ll learn about the art of televised puppetry.
