The advent of the movie musical was synchronous, if not synonymous, with the advent of the talking picture, from the first Vitaphone Varieties to The Jazz Singer. In the decades since, musicals have epitomized sound cinema’s affinity for transposing intangible feelings into exuberantly elastic displays of movement in time and space, song and dance.This monthly series of theatrical screenings at MoMI surveys classic, modern, and contemporary musicals from the United States, Europe, Bollywood, and beyond. Please note: these films are often curated with a family-friendly audience in mind, unless otherwise noted.
