Tribute to Sinéad O’Connor

She may have starred in one of the most riveting documents of the MTV era—her emotive performance in “Nothing Compares 2 U” video remains incomparable over 30 years later—but Sinéad O’Connor appeared in very few films during her tragically short life. Yet even within her scant filmography the Irish supernova made a strong impression. Our modest tribute to the towering talent of the late singer and artist includes Neil Jordan’s surrealistic coming-of-age drama The Butcher Boy, in which O’Connor plays none other than the Virgin Mother, a cheeky bit of stunt casting (considering her well-publicized issues with the Catholic church) that she leans into with aplomb, and Kathryn Ferguson’s authorized 2022 documentary Nothing Compares, which foregrounds the artist’s words and perspective several decades after she’d weathered a tidal wave of cultural scrutiny and judgment.
