Martin Scorsese: Four Tales Over Four Decades
Dec 2 — Dec 23, 2019
Over the past 40 years, Martin Scorsese’s cinema has traversed genres, continents, and centuries, toggled between narrative and documentary film, and collaborated with many— actually, nearly all—of the era’s greatest performers. Yet there is also a distinct strand of his work that has offered audiences an incomparable opportunity to trace certain collaborations over four decades via four suitably time-spanning masterworks. From Raging Bull to GoodFellas to Casino to this year’s The Irishman, Oscar winners Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci have reunited with Scorsese and mainstay master editor Thelma Schoonmaker on stories of families inherited and constructed, fortunes made and lost, heroes and antiheroes swept up by Icarian hubris and grounded by unrelenting mortality. With The Irishman, the family expands to welcome, somehow for the first time, Oscar-winner Al Pacino, and welcome back Oscar nominee Harvey Keitel, whose ubiquity in Scorsese’s first decade of filmmaking helps to spiritually and aesthetically tie together a half century of cinema— undeniably one of the most significant bodies of work in the history of motion pictures, and one that continues to grow, amaze, and move.
