Saturday, Apr 22 at 5:30 p.m.

Location: Redstone Theater

Michael Snow’s impact on Akerman’s filmmaking is evident in this pairing of Michael Snow’s classic Wavelength with La Chambre and Hotel Monterey, two films that Akerman made during her 1971–72 stay in New York City. Both Akerman films were shot by Jeanne Dielman cinematographer Babette Mangolte. In essence, Wavelength is a 45-minute zoom filmed in a Soho apartment loft. As minimal as this sounds, there are not only fluctuations in color and light, but also a complex soundtrack collage and mysterious narrative elements. Akerman’s La Chambre references both Wavelength and Snow’s Back and Forth as it takes three circular panning shots around a  New York apartment, at one point passing Akerman in her bed. Hotel Monterey is an hour-long visual study of a seedy Upper West Side single-room occupancy hotel, at once a documentary and an elegant, beautiful visual poem that is as fascinated by the architecture of the building as the lives of its inhabitants.
