Part of Jeanne Dielman and Its Roots
Dir. Jean-Luc Godard, 1967, 87 mins. DCP. With Marina Vlady. While it was a viewing of Godard’s 1965 film Pierrot le fou that famously inspired 15-year-old Chantal Akerman to become a filmmaker, his 1967 masterpiece Two or Three Things I Know About Her is closer to Jeanne Dielman in subject and in its use of documentary elements. At the film’s center is a housewife from the Paris suburbs who comes to the city to work as a prostitute, but Godard takes a discursive approach, creating a freewheeling philosophical essay, zooming in on a cup of coffee while the narrator (himself) speculates on the nature of the cosmos. It becomes clear that the “her” refers to Paris as well, and that Godard’s real subject is nothing less than contemporary life itself: language, money, war, and the search for meaning. Appropriately, the film is in widescreen, with ravishing cinematography by Raoul Coutard.
