Dir. Domee Shi. 2022, 100 mins. DCP. With the voices of Sandra Oh, Rosalie Chiang. The delightful Pixar comedy Turning Red embraces the confidence and dorkiness of its protagonist, 13-year-old Mei, who turns into a giant red panda when she gets emotional. Mei is an overachiever in school and at home, helping her stern but loving mother take care of the family temple. But she is also wonderfully goofy and shares a love for the boy band 4*Town (featuring songs written by Billie Eilish and FINNEAS) with her best friends Abby, Priya, and Miriam. The girls find a way to raise money to go see 4*Town by promoting Mei as a panda, but it all comes to a head the night of the concert. One of the only Pixar films directed by a woman, the Toronto-set Turning Red is a hilarious and compassionate coming-of-age tale, incorporating influences from Sailor Moon and other manga and anime written by women. Rated PG; recommended for ages 10+
