Dir. Mark Cousins. UK. 2021, 160 mins. DCP. A decade after his synoptic inquiry into 20th-century cinema, The Story of Film: An Odyssey, film historian Mark Cousins returns with a hopeful tale of cinematic innovation at the frontiers of our young century. In A New Generation, he turns his sharp, meticulous gaze on world cinema from 2010 to 2021, using a surprising range of works—including Frozen, The Babadook, and Cemetery of Splendor—as launchpads to explore recurring themes and emerging motifs, from the evolution of film language, to technology’s role in moviemaking today, to shifting identities. Most of all, Cousins seeks out films, filmmakers, and communities underrepresented in traditional film histories, with a particular emphasis on Asian and Middle Eastern works, as well as boundary-pushing documentaries and films that view gender in new ways. A Music Box Films release. View trailer.
