The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance

Friday, Feb 18 at 7:00 p.m.

Location: Redstone Theater

Dir. John Ford. 1962. 123 mins. DCP. With James Stewart, John Wayne, Vera Miles, Woody Strode. Strode’s third film for Ford sees him in the role of Pompey, the faithful employee and right hand of Wayne’s tragic rancher Tom Doniphon. As with most of his performances as a member of the Ford stock company, it’s an ensemble role, but Strode’s graceful presence, always slyly underlined compositionally, becomes haunting and heartbreaking in equal measure. The moment where Pompey loses the second clause of the Declaration of Independence only to have it recited over him by the condescending lawyer Ransom Stoddard (Stewart) is one of the most sadly eloquent in American cinema.
