Dir. Eric Rohmer. 1986, 98 mins. In French with English subtitles. 35mm. With Marie Rivière, Béatrice Romand, Carita, Vincent Gauthier. One of the great movies set during summertime, Rohmer’s emotionally complex yet intensely satisfying tale deals with the anxieties and pleasures of that elusive thing known as vacation. Rivière stars as the independent but insecure Delphine, a newly single young Parisian seeking a holiday companion for August. Rohmer follows Delphine as she meets and rejects, glides and stumbles in her longing for connection. The title refers to a rare meteorological event (referred to in the novel The Green Ray by Jules Verne), which Delphine becomes fascinated with seeing for herself, and which comes to stand in for a kind of transcendent, spiritual hope. Rivière co-wrote her largely self-created role, and she delivers one of the most memorable and complicated performances in any Rohmer film. (Released in the U.S. on August 29, 1986)
