SCREENING

The Fugitive

Sunday, Feb 25 at 3:15 p.m.

Location: Redstone Theater

Snubbed: Harrison Ford

Dir. Andrew Davis. 1993, U.S. 130 mins. 35mm. With Harrison Ford, Tommy Lee Jones, Sela Ward, Julianne Moore, Jeroen Krabbé, Joe Pantoliano. This blockbuster adaptation of the hit 1960s television series gave Ford one of his greatest roles as Dr. Richard Kimble, a surgeon who has been sentenced to death after being framed for the murder of his wife and escapes prison during a freak bus accident. A stellar showcase for Ford’s pathos, physicality, and intensity, The Fugitive rests on his shoulders, giving viewers an emotional anchor throughout Davis’s many brilliant action set pieces. The film was nominated for Best Picture, and Jones deservedly won a supporting Oscar as the acerbic U.S. marshal doggedly tracking him throughout the Chicago area as he evades capture, yet Ford (who has only been nominated once in his career, for 1985’s Witness) was left off the list for Best Actor, instigating conversations about Ford’s underappreciated talents and Oscar’s continual ignoring of action stars in general.
