The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse

Ingram’s adaptation of Vicente Blasco Ibáñez’s 1916 best–seller is remembered today mostly for having made Rudolph Valentino a national superstar. But it’s still one of cinema’s grandest and most powerful antiwar statements. Centered around the Madariaga clan, a landed Argentine family whose scions ultimately find themselves on opposite sides of the Great War, the epic narrative comes to life through the incandescent energy of Valentino’s performance and the pioneering cinematography of John F. Seitz, whose feathery lighting schemes practically invented the “soft style” that would hold sway for the ensuing decade.
