Part of Curators’ Choice 2022
With co-star Paul Dano in person!
Dir. Steven Spielberg. 2022, 151 mins. DCP. With Michelle Williams, Paul Dano, Seth Rogen, Gabriel LaBelle, Judd Hirsch. Spielberg’s autobiographical journey into his adolescence is a marvelously multilayered experience, an inquiry into the origins of the creative impulse, Jewish-American assimilationist identity, and his own family’s lost paradise of domestic happiness. Working with his frequent script collaborator Tony Kushner, Spielberg has made a studio picture of rare emotional delicacy and personal depth, dramatizing through the barely fictionalized tale of young Sammy Fabelman his own coming-of-age as an artist and child of divorce. At the center of the film is the complex relationship between Sammy (LaBelle) and his mother, Mitzi (a marvelous Williams), who is plagued by her own personal disappointments and regrets, as well as her long-standing attraction to her husband’s best friend (Rogen). Made at a moment when the future of serious American studio cinema is in question, The Fabelmans functions as a loving ode to the movies, yes, but it’s much more than that: an intelligent, curious, and, of course, entertaining examination of why we watch—and some of us make—movies in the first place.
