Location: Redstone Theater

Dir. Guillermo del Toro. 2001, 106 mins. 35mm. In Spanish with English subtitles. With Marisa Paredes, Eduardo Noriega, Federico Luppi, Fernando Tielve. The Day of the Dead is a holiday for Mexicans to commemorate those we have lost. Its roots go back thousands of years and has become a hybrid of Catholic tradition and ancient Mexican mysticism, celebrating death as a natural part of life, and a way to remember and honor our loved ones. This year as part of MoMI’s Day of the Dead celebration, we present The Devil’s Backbone, directed by Oscar-winning Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, an emotional and beautifully crafted horror film that depicts the intersection between longing for loved ones who have passed away (the ghost of the character of the little boy Santi) and the hope for their return. Set during the Spanish Civil War, The Devil’s Backbone takes place amid a climate of extreme violence and features unforgettable imagery that is at once frightening and delicate.

Note: This film is rated R.

Tickets: $15 / $11 senior and students / $9 youth (ages 3–17) / discounted for MoMI members ($7–$11). Order tickets. Please pick up tickets at the Museum’s admissions desk upon arrival. All seating is general admission. Review safety protocols before your visit.
