Part of Silents, Please!
Dir. Ted Wilde. 1928, 86 mins. DCP. With Harold Lloyd, Ann Christy, Bert Woodruff, Byron Douglas, Babe Ruth. Yankees-crazed soda jerk and cabby Harold “Speedy” Swift (Lloyd) loves his neighborhood sweetheart Jane (Christy), whose grandfather Pop (Woodruff) is the proprietor of New York City’s last horse-drawn streetcar. When a greedy automotive streetcar magnate (Douglas) comes to buy out Pop, Speedy takes matters into his own hands to stop the would-be monopolist. Featuring an indelible visit to Coney Island, a cameo appearance by Babe Ruth himself, and one of the greatest chases in silent film comedy, Lloyd’s final masterpiece is a rollicking summer ride through old New York.
