Poland. Dir. Piotr Domalewski. 2017, 100 mins. Digital projection. With Dawid Ogrodnik, Tomasz Zietek, Arkadiusz Jakubik. In Polish with English subtitles. U.S. premiere. Winner of Best Film, Director, Script, and Actor at this year’s Polish Film Awards, the potent feature debut from Piotr Domalewski heralds the arrival of one of the country’s most accomplished rising stars. On Christmas Eve in a small village, Adam—a young economic migrant who works in the Netherlands—unexpectedly returns home for his large family’s holiday gathering. What the clan doesn’t know is that Adam has an ulterior motive for the visit—one that will force a reckoning with the dark undercurrents of Polish family life. Masterfully balancing raw naturalism with tragicomic humor, “Domalewski’s may be just the voice that Polish cinema needs: quiet, yet persistent—and most of all, not afraid to tell the truth” (Cineuropa).
