Dir. Andy Milligan. 1968, 84 mins. Digital projection. With Maggie Rogers, Candy Hammond, Anthony Moscini, Neil Flannigan, Lucy Silvay, Gene Connolly. Against the wishes of Claris Manning (Rogers), her children are home for the holidays, rekindling longsimmering tensions. As dangerous, perverse secrets are unearthed, and the malignant Manning matriarch spitefully exploits her children’s anxieties and traumas, an unknown killer begins picking off the members of the household in increasingly sadistic ways. The real horror of this rarely screened psycho family melodrama is found less in its gruesome visuals than in the cruelty of family and humanity, which bursts off the screen during every hateful interaction. Seeds is a fascinating, brutal relic from the 1960s heyday of the exploitation film, carrying all the obsessive and ghastly hallmarks of underappreciated underground auteur Andy Milligan, the misanthropic master of the 42nd street manifesto.
