Location: Redstone Theater

With director Lois Patiño in person

Dir. Lois Patiño. Spain. 2023, 113 mins. DCP. In Lao and Swahili with English subtitles. Marking a striking departure from the mythic Galician landscapes of his previous films (Coast of Death, Red Moon Tide), Patiño’s latest inquiry into the spiritual valences of cinema travels first to the temples of Laos and then to the shores of Tanzania by way of the Tibetan Book of the Dead. In the former, a young man named Amid tends to an old woman on the precipice of death and befriends Bee An, a novice monk. In the latter, a girl named Juwairiya awakens to find her family’s goat has given birth. The two chapters are less stories than contexts that allow Patiño to hypnotically observe two distinct and vibrant cultures with their attendant daily rituals and cosmic worldviews, joined by a sensory passageway of inchoate sound and vision that has a genuinely purifying effect. Special Jury Award, 2023 Berlinale Encounters. U.S. premiere

Dir. Ojoboca (Anja Dornieden and Juan David González Monroy). Germany, 1.5 mins. 16mm.Using 16mm film, we attempted to produce a perfectly satisfying shot: the destruction of a dessert in reverse motion. Despite numerous attempts we were left ungratified. Consequently, we sent a different iteration of the shot to 20 film experts, asking each one for their expert analysis. This is one of the shots accompanied by an analysis written by Phil Coldiron. The analysis will be read aloud prior to the screening.” World premiere
