SCREENING, DRIVE-IN PRESENTATION

Rocky + Creed

Friday, Mar 12, 2021 at 6:30 pm

These two milestone films in the Rocky saga continue to inspire audiences across generations.

Rocky
Dir. John G. Avildsen. U.S., 1976, 119 mins. With Sylvester Stallone, Talia Shire, Burgess Meredith, Burt Young, Carl Weathers. The classic underdog tale that launched a fleet of sequels, reboots, and copycats follows a small-time boxer Rocky (Stallone) who’s chosen to take on the reigning world heavyweight champion, Apollo Creed (Weathers), with only five weeks to prepare. While training, Rocky embarks on a tentative romantic relationship with Adrian (Shire), the sister of his pal Paulie (Young). Featuring an iconic score by Bill Conti and unforgettable images that capture the American underdog spirit (such as Rocky racing up the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s stone steps), Rocky launched screenwriter-actor Stallone’s career and won three Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
Rated: PG

Creed
Dir. Ryan Coogler. U.S., 2015, 133 mins. With Michael B. Jordan, Sylvester Stallone, Tessa Thompson, Anthony Bellew. Before directing 2018’s Black Panther, Ryan Coogler explored this new chapter in the Rocky saga, starring Jordan as the son of heavyweight champion Apollo Creed and Stallone, returning in his iconic role of Rocky Balboa. With boxing in his blood, Adonis Johnson aims for the title shot and boldly asks for advice from the retired boxer. Rocky agrees to train the young fighter even though the former champ is battling a deadlier opponent: cancer. Energetically shot by Maryse Alberti and beautifully acted, Creed is a welcome reinvention of a story that continues to invigorate audiences.
Rated: PG-13
