Dir. Richard Marquand. 1983, 132 mins. DCP. With Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Billy Dee Williams, Anthony Daniels, David Prowse, James Earl Jones, Kenny Baker, Peter Mayhew, Frank Oz, Ian McDiarmid. The third and final film in the original Star Wars trilogy arrived three summers after The Empire Strikes Back—agonizingly long for those worrying over the fates of imperiled heroes. Puppet master George Lucas rejoined the writing team (alongside Lawrence Kasdan, who’d directed summer sleeper hit Body Heat between Star Wars installments) to engineer a more colorful, cuddlier affair, complete with swashbuckling set pieces, slapstick comedy, and a tribe of small, adorably furry woodland go-getters called Ewoks. Careening from a kingpin’s desert lair to a dense redwood forest, our heroes rise up against the evil Empire, with Luke Skywalker (Hamill) confronting both Darth Vader (Prowse/Jones) and the latter’s master, a shadowy wizard called The Emperor (McDiarmid), inside a new Death Star that’s still under construction—and already under Rebel attack(Released May 25, 1983)
