Dir. Rainer Werner Fassbinder. West Germany. 1982, 108 mins. DCP. With Brad Davis, Jeanne Moreau, Franco Nero, Laurent Malet. New German Cinema bad boy Fassbinder’s filmography is suffused with his turbulent feelings about his own queerness: at once buzzing with aggression and yet vulnerable to exploitation and self-destruction. His final completed film, an adaptation of Jean Genet’s novel Querelle de Brest, packs his sexual energy and ambivalence into a powder keg, with Davis as a classic Genet character: a murderer, thief, and gay sailor torn apart by his own conflicting feelings about power and masculinity. Pushing his lurid aesthetics to their limit, replete with phallic matte paintings, a crooning Jeanne Moreau, and sweat dripping from his performers’ brows, Fassbinder crafted the ultimate ode to white gay self-immolation.
