Dir. Ira Sachs. 2023, 91 mins. DCP. With Franz Rogowski, Ben Whishaw, Adèle Exarchopoulos. The latest from celebrated filmmaker Ira Sachs (Love Is Strange, Keep the Lights On, Forty Shades of Blue) is also his sharpest and sexiest drama yet. Passages explores a Parisian love triangle between three beautiful bohemians: Tomas (rising international star Rogowski), Martin (Whishaw), and Agathe (Exarchopoulos). Tomas and Martin’s marriage is thrown into crisis when the former begins a passionate affair with Agathe, a younger woman he meets after completing his latest film. While the mild-mannered Martin is at first tolerant, even supportive of his partner’s needs, over time his patience becomes severely tested. Perceptive, intimate, brutally funny, and unashamedly frank about physical desire, Passages sees Sachs bridge his characteristic observational clarity with a uniquely European sensibility, providing an insightful and authentic take on the complexities, contradictions, and cruelties of love and desire. A MUBI release.
