Dir. Claire Simon. 2023, France. 168 mins. DCP. Master documentary filmmaker Simon (The Grocer’s Son, the Mayor, the Village and the World and Young Solitude, which both screened in First Look) trains her camera on a gynecological ward in a public hospital in Paris. Over the course of many months of filming, and through interactions with a multitude of women, Simon captures a spectrum of fears, desires, and struggles, and a representation of women at all stages of life. In the process she questions what it means to live in a woman’s body, as well as how doctors, nurses, and medical institutions at large respond to myriad yet universal needs of patients—a group that, before this uncommonly generous and inclusive film reaches its conclusion, comes to include the filmmaker herself. Nominated for the Gotham Award for Best Documentary and the Cinema Eye Award for Outstanding Direction.
