Dir. Hong Sang-soo. 2017, 101 mins. Digital Projection. With Kim Min-hee, Seo Young-hwa, Jeong Jae-yeong. In Korean with English subtitles. In this quietly devastating, boldly autobiographical work, Young-hee is an actress reeling in the aftermath of a publicized affair with a married director. At first she escapes to Hamburg, but once back in Korea and in the boozy company of her friends, increasingly startling confessions surface. Hong, whose real-life affair with Kim was a media scandal in Korea, here confronts his emotional life with newfound emotional directness, centered around a vulnerable and raw performance by Kim Min-hee, whose performance was awarded the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the Berlin Film Festival.
“As gut-wrenching, funny, and formally freewheeling as anything in recent cinema.” — Dan Sullivan, Film Comment
