Nothing Lasts Forever

Location: Bartos Screening Room

With director Jason Kohn in person

Dir. Jason Kohn. 2022, 87 mins. DCP. The latest narratively expansive, big-screen documentary from nonfiction virtuoso Kohn (Love Means Zero, Manda Bala) takes on the international, centuries-old, so-called “precious diamond industrial complex. Traveling from continent to continent, and talking to everyone from miners to manufacturers, importers, retailers, and scientists, Kohn exposes a system built on performed scarcity, and in which the creation of seemingly arbitrary value engenders far-reaching, often deadly consequences. From this incisive and wildly entertaining investigation arise questions over the entire notion of authenticity. The further some go to establish objective value, the more the very industry founded upon that value tries to manufacture new, less volatile meaning. Filled with jaw-dropping interviews with a cast of characters that would make the Safdie brothers envious, and shot in gorgeous widescreen by DP Heloísa Passos, Nothing Lasts Forever benefits from more than a decade of filming, ushering the viewer from one economical era to another, and back and forth between guarded fact and manufactured fiction.
