Dir. Barbara Hammer. U.S. 1992, 67 mins. Digital projection. Experimental filmmaker Barbara Hammer spent her career charting unknown pathways by inventing a language of cinematic lesbianism, not least of all with this exceptional 1992 work of nonfiction. A collage of images and sounds conveying the intrinsic relationship between desire, memory, and history, Nitrate Kisses examines where queerness is hidden in plain sight, the institutionalization of heterosexuality, the lengths people will go to excavate their identities, and the political and social context of understanding the self. Here, lesbianism is a language. For Hammer, who passed away in 2019, queerness was part of the fabric of living, loving, being.

Tickets: $15 / $11 senior and students / $9 youth (ages 3–17) / discounted for MoMI members ($7–$11). Order tickets. Please pick up tickets at the Museum’s admissions desk upon arrival. All seating is general admission. Review safety protocols before your visit.
