Mariupolis

Saturday, Aug 19 at 1:30 pm

Location: Bartos Screening Room

Dir. Mantas Kvedaravicius. 2016, 90 mins. In Ukrainian with English subtitles. In the wake of Russia’s siege of Crimea in 2014, Lithuanian director Kvedaravicius vividly filmed everyday life in the nearby Ukrainian city of Mariupol. A man repairs his net, then heads out to fish. Two trams run into each other—nobody is hurt, and cables are fixed the same day. A small concert is given for factory workers, and a violin solo brings tears to their eyes. Also, bombs fall into the sea. For the poets, the shoemakers, the children and the seniors, life proceeds apace, albeit limned with the threat of attacks and the sounds of alarms and cannon fire.

On Friday, August 18, the film will be presented alongside Kvedaravicius’s 2022 film Mariupolis 2, which screens at 7:30 p.m. See both at a discounted rate using this link ($5 off).

Tickets: $15 / $11 senior and students / $9 youth (ages 3–17) / free for MoMI members at the Senior/Student level and above. Order tickets. Please pick up tickets at the Museum’s admissions desk upon arrival. All seating is general admission. Review safety protocols before your visit.
