Location: Bartos Screening Room

Dir. Berry Gordy. 1975, 109 mins. 35mm. With Diana Ross, Billy Dee Williams, Anthony Perkins. For her second major role, Diana Ross reunited with Lady Sings the Blues co-star Billy Dee Williams in this post–sexual revolution story of a rags-to-riches Chicago fashion designer who is forced to choose between romance and a burgeoning career. A Motown production, the film was directed by label founder Berry Gordy after English filmmaker Tony Richardson was dismissed soon after production began. The film is best known for “Theme from Mahogany (Do You Know Where You’re Going To),” a #1 hit that was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Song, and the fact that Ross designed her own outre costumes.
