From a script by Kazuo Ishiguro (author of The Remains of the Day and Never Let Me Go), Living is a reimagining of Akira Kurosawa’s 1952 classic Ikiru. Set in a 1953 London still shattered by WWII, the film stars Nighy in a career-defining performance as Williams, a veteran civil servant who’s an impotent cog within a city bureaucracy struggling to rebuild itself. Buried under paperwork at the office and lonely at home, he has long felt his life is empty and meaningless. Then a shattering medical diagnosis forces him to take stock—and try and grasp fulfillment before it’s out of reach.
