Part of Jeanne Dielman and Its Roots
Dir. Agnès Varda, 1965, 80 mins. DCP. “I imagined a summer peach with its perfect colors,” said Agnès Varda of her stylistic approach to Le bonheur, “but inside, there is a worm.” The film’s bucolic surface contrasts with the tragic drama of a young wife and mother (Claire Drouot) whose husband (Jean-Claude Drouot) falls in love with another woman. “The idea is extraordinary,” said Akerman of one of her favorite films. “One love is worth the same as another, a person can be replaced by another. For me, Le bonheur is the most anti-romantic film there is. I talked about it with Agnès, she doesn’t agree. But it was very daring at the time. Maybe it still is now.”
