SCREENING, SCREENING + Q&A

Kokomo City + Alpha Kings

Saturday, Oct 21, 2023 at 5:00 pm

Location: Bartos Screening Room

With Alpha Kings filmmakers Faye Tsakas and Enrique Pedráza-Botero in person

Dir. D. Smith. 2023, 73 mins. DCP. In this wildly entertaining and refreshingly unfiltered documentary, filmmaker D. Smith passes the mic to four Black transgender sex workers in Atlanta and New York City—Daniella Carter, Koko Da Doll, Liyah Mitchell, and Dominique Silver—who unapologetically break down the walls of their profession. Holding nothing back, the film vibrates with energy, sex, and hard-earned wisdom. Edited and shot in evocative black-and-white, Kokomo City is the feature directorial debut of the two-time Grammy-nominated producer, singer, and songwriter who made history as the first trans woman cast on a primetime unscripted TV show (Love & Hip Hop). The film won the 2023 Sundance Film Festival’s NEXT Innovator Award and NEXT Audience Award, and the 2023 Berlinale’s Audience Award in the Panorama Documentary section.

Alpha Kings
Dirs. Faye Tsakas, Enrique Pedráza-Botero. 2022, 15 mins. From a rented mansion in suburban Texas, a group of young men sell a hyperbolic, alpha-male version of themselves on the internet. Tsakas and Pedráza-Botero’s potent short alternates between live-streamed sessions during which the men commandingly summon tips from adoring fetishists and candid off-line scenes in which they discuss how and why they’ve chosen such a brazenly transactional, screen-mediated line of work.

Tickets: $15 / $11 senior and students / $9 youth (ages 3–17) / free for MoMI members at the Senior/Student level and above. Order tickets. Please pick up tickets at the Museum’s admissions desk upon arrival. All seating is general admission. Review safety protocols before your visit.
