Dir. Henry Hathaway. 1947, 98 mins. DCP. With Victor Mature, Richard Widmark, Brian Donlevy, Coleen Gray. Hathaway’s tough-as-nails crime drama follows small-time crook Nick Bianco (Mature) who faces twenty years in jail for robbery. Pressured to snitch on his accomplices, Nick refuses until he learns that his wife has committed suicide and his children are being threatened by sneering psychopath Tommy Udo (Widmark). Nominated for two Academy Awards including Best Supporting Actor for Widmark, terrifyingly magnetic in his first screen appearance. A landmark noir, Kiss of Death is partly set in Queens, with a house on 14th Street in Astoria playing Nick Bianco’s residence.
