Location: Bartos Screening Room

With filmmaker Elaine McMillion Sheldon in person

Dir. Elaine McMillion Sheldon. 2023, 80 mins. DCP. Central Appalachia is a place of mountains and myth. Mine either of these you’ll find coal, which has had a profound influence on this community’s economy, ecology, and identity. With King Coal, native Appalachian and Academy Award–nominated filmmaker Elaine McMillion Sheldon takes us on an alluring cinematic journey through the past, present, and future of Appalachia, remixing present-day moments, atmospheric invocations of the land, archival footage, an extraordinarily evocative score, and her own poetic voiceover to alchemize a novel, nuanced depiction of this community. The hybrid approach allows Sheldon to explore the ways in which storytelling has the power to shape how a region sees itself.
