Followed by a Q&A with editor Thelma Schoonmaker, executive producer Marianne Bower, and casting director Ellen Lewis

Dir. Martin Scorsese. 2023, U.S., 206 mins. Killers of the Flower Moon is a staggering, summative tale of American violence that finds Martin Scorsese at the height of his storytelling powers. Based on David Grann’s acclaimed 2017 nonfiction book, Killers of the Flower Moon envelops the viewer in a comprehensively detailed re-creation of post–World War I Osage County, Oklahoma, where people of the Osage tribe lived in prosperity due to their ownership of oil-rich land. The wayward Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio) has returned here from fighting in France to restart life with his uncle, “King” William Hale (Robert De Niro), a wealthy white cattleman who lords with seeming benevolence over his Osage neighbors and who encourages his nephew to marry a local indigenous woman named Mollie (Lily Gladstone, in a star-making performance). Yet a series of murders of Osage people gradually reveals the racist animosity underlying the community, which spirals out to terror and tragedy. Riveting from moment to moment and superlatively acted by its entire cast, Killers of the Flower Moon is a ferocious true-crime drama that feels torn not from the headlines but from the very core of our nation’s history. An Apple Studios and Paramount Pictures release.
