Introduced by Kent Jones
Dir. Roy Ward Baker. 1953, 83 mins. 3-D DCP. With Robert Ryan, Rhonda Fleming, William Lundigan. One of the best films produced during Hollywood’s brief embrace of Technicolor 3-D, Baker’s sunbaked potboiler finds Ryan in the role of Donald, a callous millionaire stranded in the Mojave Desert with a broken right leg. Double–crossed by his two-timing wife, Gerry (Fleming), and erstwhile employee Joe (Lundigan), Donald must rely on his own wits to survive, as he literally crawls his way back to humanity. In marked contrast to the unmotivated, in-your-face gimmickry of most 3-D films of this period, Baker exploits the accentuated scale and perspective of the stereoscopic process to intensify the physical and psychological impact of the action.
