Dir. Jane Schoenbrun. 2024, 100 mins. DCP. With Justice Smith, Brigette Lundy-Paine, Ian Foreman, Helena Howard, Fred Durst, Danielle Deadwyler. In a mercurial, enormously moving performance, Smith plays outsider teen Owen, whose suburban existence transforms forever after a new friend at school (Lundy-Paine) introduces him to the late-night pleasures and pains of a mysterious TV series called “The Pink Opaque,” and his sense of reality begins to crack wide open. Schoenbrun’s follow-up to the visionary We’re All Going to the World’s Fair, an aesthetically radical portrait of a teenage girl trapped in the vortex of an online role-playing horror game, ups the ante on suburban angst, creating an eerily beautiful metaphorical evocation of the trans experience that speaks to the isolation and confusion of growing up and the ways in which popular culture and media both comfort and betray us as we try and figure out who we are.
