Ken Jacobs’s Urban Peasants, and other New York home movies

Part of the Museum’s celebration of Home Movie Day, this program includes a selection of amateur home movies filmed in New York City, followed by a screening of the film Urban Peasants (Ken Jacobs, 1975, 52 mins., 16mm.) Avant-garde film pioneer Ken Jacobs assembled these rolls of home movies recorded by his wife Flo’s Aunt Stella. “The title is no intended put-down but a simple statement of fact, as I see it. Brooklyn was a place made up of many little villages; a near-shtetl is pictured here all in the space of a storefront,” wrote Jacobs. The 40-minute film is silent, with six minutes of sound before and after.

Free. Tickets will be distributed first-come, first-served at the Museum’s admission desk (Museum admission not included).
