Dir. Audrey Diwan. 2021, 100 mins. In French with English subtitles. With Anamaria Vartolomei, Sandrine Bonnaire, Kacey Mottet Klein, Luàna Bajrami, Louise Orry-Diquéro, Louise Chevillotte. Set in 1963 France yet also horrifyingly current, Happening follows Anne, a bright young student with a promising future ahead of her. But when she falls pregnant, she sees the opportunity to finish her studies and escape the constraints of her social background disappearing. With her final exams fast approaching and her belly growing, Anne resolves to act, even if she has to confront shame and pain, even if she must risk prison to do so. Critically acclaimed and winner of the Golden Lion at the 2021 Venice Film Festival, Happening marks a breakthrough for both director Diwan and lead performer Vartolomei, who won a Cesar Award for Most Promising Actress. An IFC Films release.
