Great Expectations
Ongoing
Location: Redstone Theater
Dir. David Lean. 1946, 118 mins. 35mm. With John Mills, Valerie Hobson, Martita Hunt, Alec Guinness. Guy Green became the first British cinematographer to win an Academy Award for Best Cinematography for his unforgettable visualization of Charles Dickens’s masterpiece about the unsentimental education of Pip, an orphan making his way through early nineteenth-century England. With its graveyards, knotted tree branches, and Martita Hunt’s iconic, cobwebbed Miss Havisham, David Lean’s adaptation remains the most tactile—and the best—rendition of this oft-told tale.
