Location: Redstone Theater

Dir. Hlynur Pálmason. 2022, Iceland. 143 mins. DCP. In Icelandic and Danish with English subtitles. With Elliott Crosset Hove, Ingvar Sigurðsson, Vic Carmen Sonne, Jacob Hauberg Lohmann, Ída Mekkín Hlynsdóttir, Waage Sandø, Hilmar Guðjónsson. In the late 19th century, Danish priest Lucas (Crosset Hove) journeys to Iceland’s southeastern coast with the intention of establishing a church. After he is confronted by the harsh terrain, myriad temptations of the flesh, a language gap, and resistance by locals who view him as an intruder, Lucas’s messianic self-righteousness is put to the test. Godland is a psychological epic in which morality, spirituality, tradition, and brute force collide amidst the majesty and terror of the natural world, stunningly filmed by Maria von Hausswolff on 35mm in open matte 1.33:1, which both emphasizes the imposition of the landscape and implies its main character’s claustrophobic headspace. A Janus Films release.
