Dir. Carl Dreyer, 1964, 116 mins DCP. Imported from the Danish Film Institute. Set in the early 1900s, the great Danish director Carl Dreyer’s final film is an austere adaptation of a long-forgotten stage play about a woman who has grown discontent with her husband and goes from one unsatisfying affair to another. As she resolutely searches for true love, the film unfolds inexorably with slow takes, philosophical talk, and the weight of romantic memories. Distinctly out of fashion at the time of its release, the film has steadily grown in stature. What may have seemed stodgy and theatrical now feels highly stylized and deeply cinematic. Nina Pens Rode’s uncompromising performance as the tragic but liberated heroine is both exhilarating and heartbreaking.
