Geographies of Solitude

Friday, Jan 27, 2023 at 7:00 pm

Location: Bartos Screening Room

With a pre-recorded introduction from director Jacquelyn Mills

Dir. Jacquelyn Mills. 2022, 103 mins. DCP. One of the most acclaimed documentaries of 2022, Geographies of Solitude is deeply embedded in place. Setting her film on the legendary Sable Island, known for its herd of wild horses, unparalleled population of grey seals, and shipwrecks, Mills has created a portrait of the land’s rhythms and of naturalist Zoe Lucas, the island’s lone human inhabitant. Lucas has lived on Sable Island for more than 40 years, meticulously cataloguing its flora, fauna, and litter that washes up from around the world. Shot in textural 16mm, Geographies of Solitude also integrates archival footage, film hand-processed in the materials of the island, with sound recorded from its non-human residents. The film won three prizes at the 2022 Berlinale where it made its world premiere, and has gone on to win Best Canadian Feature, the Grand Jury Prize at South Korea’s Jeonju International Film Festival, and many more honors, including Best Emerging Director for Mills at Hot Docs.
