Dir. Jean Renoir. France. 1955, 104 mins. 35mm. In French with English subtitles. With Jean Gabin, Françoise Arnoul, María Félix. In his amazing cinematic second act, Jean Renoir created a series of dazzling Technicolor period pieces in the 1950s. The greatest of them was French Cancan, a riot of color and movement set in 19th-century Paris starring the legendary Jean Gabin as the impresario who opened the Moulin Rouge. Historical drama, love-triangle romance, and music-filled extravaganza all at once, Renoir’s thrilling vision climaxes in an extended, splendid burst of dance and color that needs to be seen to be believed.
